Chief of Staff
Say what you want done. Chief of Staff drafts a plan you approve, runs it with helper agents and comes back when it needs you.
Chief of Staff is one window for delegated work. You say what you want done, by typing or by holding to talk. It drafts a plan with your company context, you edit and approve it, and a Claude lead agent runs it by handing steps to Claude helper agents in your space. It comes back only when it needs you or has results for approval.
Turn it on, and off
- Choose Experience › Turn Chief of Staff On, or go to Settings › Agent coordination › Chief of Staff.
- While it’s on, Chief of Staff heads the sidebar, and ⌘K opens it.
- Turn it off the same way, any time. Agents it started are ordinary XAgents tabs, so turning it off never strands work.
It’s off by default. While it’s off, XAgents is unchanged: no sidebar entry, no extra menus, and nothing running in the background.
From request to results
- Ask. Type, or hold Space on an empty prompt (or the mic) to talk. A quick tap latches dictation, and ⌘↩ drafts the plan. Speech is recognized on your Mac.
- Plan. You get a title, an outcome and one to six steps. Edit, reorder, add or remove any of them. Choose the lead model, the permission mode and a folder.
- Approve. Nothing starts until you press Approve and start.
- Run. The lead delegates steps to helpers in parallel where it can. Every agent is a tab you can open, read along with or take over.
- Review. Chief of Staff comes back with a summary, the draft PR and branch, changed files, checks and what still needs your approval. Approve results, Ask for changes or Close.

It asks before it acts
- The lead works under the permission mode you pick: Ask first, Auto-edit or Bypass, the same as a new agent.
- It’s told not to delete, deploy, push to shared branches, send messages, buy, or change permissions or credentials without your explicit approval.
- You can add your own rules to the request, for example “ask me before committing”.
- Permission prompts are never answered for you. The card sends you to that agent’s tab.

Company context
Open Company context to write the background Chief of Staff should know: your company, products and repos, owners, conventions and what never to touch. It’s a plain document stored on your Mac.
